Photos of the frame during manufacture in the workshop (Click on the thumbnails) Photos (& time) from the day the frame went up
|
After weeks of preparation in the workshop, the frame is ready to be assembled on site. Interestingly, this is the first time that the whole frame will go together. We fit each mortise and tenon together individually during the manufacturing, but the whole frame is often too big to fit in the workshop! The pictures above show the roof fitted together in the workshop, but not the whole frame. The frame featured here was put up near Windsor on the 23rd November 2001.
08:10 Early morning, with all the components of the frame on-site and ready to go up.
10:11 The jowl-posts are put into position and the braces fitted, ready to take the wall plate and trusses.
10:36 The trusses are assembled on site and are draw-pegged with hand crafted oak pegs to give the joints extra strength.
12:32 The wall-plate is on and one truss is already in position. The second is being lifted into position. If you look closely, you can see the curved tie-beam, cut following the grain of the oak to maximise strength as well as character!
14:36 The last piece being lifted into place.
15:19 "Topping out" at the end of the day.
